The 2025 EPS Young Researcher Award

The 2025 EPS Young Researcher award is granted to Dr. Satoshi Andoh, as the first author of the following paper.
This paper investigated the dynamics of the Es layers using a high-resolution three-dimensional ionospheric numerical model including metallic ions. The authors demonstrated that Es layers are constrained at the zonal-wind shear nodes above an altitude of 110 km, but transported by horizontal winds below 110 km. They also showed that horizontal transport of metallic ions plays an important role in the generation and disappearance of the Es layers. The movement of the Es layers reproduced by the simulation agrees well with recent observations of the Es layers, providing a general explanation for previous observations of the Es layers. The result in this study is one of the most important discoveries in the research of the Es layers. This study not only leads to a better understanding of the dynamics of Es layers but also provides a useful tool for the prediction of the Es layer occurrence in the context of space weather. The first author, Dr. Satoshi Andoh, made the primary contributions to this study. In recognition of these outstanding achievements and contributions to ionospheric science through EPS, the EPS Young Researcher Award has been presented to Dr. Satoshi Andoh.
