[Frontier Letter] COURSE: Cross-scale cOUpling pRocesses in the Solar–tErrestrial system—SCOSTEP’s new program for 2026–2030

The Scientific Committee on Solar–Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) program for the upcoming period 2026–2030 is called COURSE (Cross-scale cOUpling pRocesses in the Solar–tErrestrial system) and aims at facilitating a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach through focused, internationally coordinated efforts addressing the main theme of cross-scale coupling processes in the Sun-Earth system. The program is organized in three scientific focus areas, which have specific scientific key questions and objectives, but are naturally interconnected by several overarching themes: cross scale coupling processes, societal impacts, extreme events, human and robotic exploration, improving predictions. The implementation of COURSE is recommended through: novel methods, including machine learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques; integrated and validated models; new missions; the combination of multipoint in-situ data with ground observations; improved metadata; adoption of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles.
